Full Form of UGC is University Grants Commission. The UGC has the unique distinction of being the only grant giving agency in the country which has been vested with two responsibilities: that of providing funds and that of coordination, determination and maintenance of standards in institutions of higher education.

UGC CSIR currently conducts National Eligibility Test (NET) for appointments of teachers in colleges and universities.CSIR UGC made NET qualification mandatory for teaching at Graduation level and at Post Graduation level since July 2009. However, those with Ph.D are given five percent relaxation.

The National Eligibility Test (NET) is conducted by UGC CSIR to test the eligibility of candidates applying for lectureship and for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

The test acts as a means to ensure minimum standards for the entrants in the teaching profession and research. It is held for Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications and Electronic Science.

The UGC CSIR Net Exam is aimed at assessing the teaching and general/research aptitude as Well as their awareness .Therefore, The main objective is to assess the teaching and research capabilities of the candidates. They are expected to possess and exhibit some abilities like comprehension, analysis, evaluation. The candidates are also expected to have a general awareness and knowledge of sources of information. They should be aware of interaction between people, environment and natural resources and their impact on quality of life.

Candidate seeking admission to the Test must apply for UGC Net online application through as per  ugc net notification.

Then  ugc net admit card are alloted to candidates along with the for the exam in different  ugc net exam centre.

NET exam is conducted twice a year, i.e., in the months of June and December. The notifications announcing the June and December examinations are published in the months of March and September respectively in the weekly journal of nation-wide circulation, viz, Employment News.

The details of Net exam syllabus are given in the following sections:

i) Each section gets equal weightage : five questions and 10 marks each section.
ii) Whenever pictorial questions are set for the sighted candidates a passage followed by equal number of questions should be set for the visually handicapped candidates.

Main Sections of Net exam syllabus are given below :-

I. Teaching Attitude
Teaching : Nature, objectives, characteristics and basic requirements; Learner’s characteristics; Factors affecting teaching; Methods of teaching; Teaching aids; Evaluation systems.

II. Research Aptitude
Research : Meaning, characteristics and types; Steps of research; Methods of research; Research Ethics; Paper, article, workshop, seminar, conference and symposium; Thesis writing: its characteristics and format.

III. Reading Comprehension
A passage to be set with questions to be answered.

IV. Communication
Communication : Nature, characteristics, types, barriers and efiective classroom communication.

V. Reasoning (Including Mathematical)
Number series; letter series; codes, Relationships; classification.

VI. Logical Reasoning
Understanding the structure of arguments; Evaluating and distinguishing deductive and inductive reasoning; Verbal analogies : Word analogy — Applied analogy; Verbal classification;
Reasoning Logical Diagrams : Simple diagrammatic relationship, multidiagrammatic relationship;
Venn diagram; Analytical Reasoning.

VII. Data Interpretation
Sources, acquisition and interpretation of data, Quantitative and qualitative data, Graphical representation and mapping of data.

VIII. Information and and Communicating Technology (ICT)
ICT : meaning, advantages, disadvantages and uses; General abbreviations and terminology; Basics of internet and e-mailing.

IX. People and Environment
People and environment interaction;
Sources of pollution;
Pollutants and their impact on human life, exploitation of natural and energy
Natural hazards and mitigation

XI. Higher Education System : Governance Polity And Administration;
Structure of the institutions for higher learning and research in India; formal and distance education; professional/technical and general education; value education: governance, polity and administration; concept, institutions and their interactions.

  • UGC Net Eligibility :-

    Net exam eligibility terms are given below :-

    1. Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks (without rounding off) in Master’s Degree
    2. Candidates who have appeared OR will be appearing at the qualifying Master’s degree (final year) examination and whose result is still awaited
  • UGC NET Exam pattern :-

The NET exam consists of of three papers. All the three question papers consist of only objective type questions in two separate sessions as under:

  • First session:

Paper I (100 marks): The exam will consist of 60 out of which 50 question have to be attempted. The exam will be held for one hour 15 minutes (09.30 am to 10.45 am)

The exam shall be of general nature, intended to assess the teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. The question paper is designed to test the reasoning ability, comprehension, divergent thinking and general awareness of the candidate.

Each question will carry a weightage of two marks each, out of which the candidate would be required to answer any 50. In case the candidate attempts more than 50 questions, the first 50 questions attempted by the candidate will be evaluated.

Paper II (100 marks): The exam will consist of 50 questions of which all are compulsory. The exam will be held for one hour 15 minutes (10.45 am to 12.00 noon)

The question paper will consist of 50 objective type compulsory questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry 2 marks.

  • Second session:

Paper III (150 marks): The exam will consist of 75 questions of which all are compulsory. The exam will be held for two hour 30 minutes (01.30 pm to 4.00 pm).

The question paper will consist of 75 objective type compulsory questions based on the subject selected by the candidate. Each question will carry 2 marks.
