UPSC Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service Exam

The Union Public Service Commission conducts the Indian Economic/Statistical Services Examination to recruit officers in the planning commission, planning board, ministry of economic affairs, national sample survey and other allied offices where specialists in economics and statistics are required. Selected candidates are also placed in the labor Bureau, Central Electricity Authority, Economic Advisers to many ministries, Forward Market Commission, Tariff Commission, Planning Board, Tariff Commission National sample survey, etc. Candidates may even go on deputations to different agencies of United Nations.

Union Public Service Commission has announced the notification for the recruitment in Indian Economic Service/Indian Statistical Service (IES/ISS-2015).UPSC will be conduct the IES/ISS exam in the month of May. The exam dates for the IES/ISS exam is declared as Saturday, May 23, 2015 (3 days). IES/ISS exam is conducted for recruitment to the Grade IV officers for the Indian Statistical Service (ISS) and Indian Economic Service (IES).

Important Dates

Age Limit:-

Age limit for IES/ISS exam is 21-30 years (as on 01st August 2014). Candidates born between 02nd August 1983 and 01st August, 1992 are eligible to apply.

The age relaxation given to BC/SC/ST candidates as per guidelines of UPSC as :–

  1. For SC/ST Candidates : 5 Years
  2. For BC candidates : 3 Years

Minimum Educational Qualification:-

  • Candidates aspiring for the Indian Economic Service must passed his Postgraduate degree in Economics/Applied Economics/Business Economics/ Econometrics from a recognized institute by UGC.
  • Candidates aspiring for the Indian Statistical Service must passed his Post-Graduate degree in Statistics/Mathematical Statistics/ Applied Statistics from a recognized institute by UGC.

Application Fee :-

Application Fee for the IES/ISS exam to be paid by the candidates is :-

  • For General and OBC Candidates : Rs. 200/- (rupees two hundred only)
  • Female/SC/ST/ PH candidates are exempted from payment of fee.

Candidates are required to pay application fee either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/ State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/ State Bank of Patiala/State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

How To Apply:

IES/ISS application form can be obtainable from the designated Head Post Offices/Post Offices throughout the country and may be purchased against cash payment of Rs. 20/- along with an Information Brochure containing general instructions for filling up the form, an acknowledgement card and an envelope for sending the application. Candidates must use the application form having an attachment of Information Brochure. photocopy/ reproduction/ unauthorized printed copy of the Form should not be used by the candidate . This may lead to rejection of the form. Each form can be used only once and only for one exam.

Steps to apply Online :-

  1. Candidates are required to apply online on UPSC official website – www.upsc.gov.in
  2. Detailed instructions for filling up Online Application form is as follows
  3. Candidate are first required to fill the Part-I of the application form.
  4. After filling in the application candidates are required to make payment of application fee.
  5. Application fee can be paid either through online or offline means.
  6. After doing so you are required to fill Part-II of the application form.
  7. A scanned signature and photograph of the candidate have to be uploaded.
  8. On successful completion of the process you will be issued a registration number.
  9. A print of the application form must be taken for future reference.

UPSC IES/ISS Exam Pattern

The IES/ISS exam pattern consists of two parts and will be according to the pattern described by UPSC below:

Part I. Written examination carrying a maximum of 1000 marks in the subjects as shown below.

Part II. Viva voice of such candidates as may be called by the Commission, carrying a maximum of 200 marks.

  1. The question papers in all the subjects will be of Conventional (essay) type.
  2. Medium of Question Papers will be English only and have to be answered in English.
  3. Candidates must write the papers with their own hand. Any help of a scribe is not permissible to write the answers for them.
  4. The Commission will fix qualifying marks in all the subjects of the examination.
  5. If a candidate’s handwriting is not easily legible, a deduction will be made on his account from the total marks.
  6. Marks will not be allotted for mere superficial knowledge.
  7. More Credit will be given for orderly, effective and exact answer combined with due economy words.
  8. In the exam, SI units must to be used, wherever required.
  9. Candidates will be allowed the use of Scientific (Non-Programmable type) Calculator at the examination.
  10. Candidates should use only International form of numerals (e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,6 etc.) while answering question papers.
  • PART-II

Viva voice (Interview) 

The candidate will be interviewed by a Board after the result of written exam. The purpose of the interview is to assess the suitability of the candidate for the Service for which he/she has competed. The interview is intended to supplement the written examination for testing the general and specialized knowledge and abilities of the candidate.
